Making Summer Plans To Shrink What Little Lawn is Left!

Earlier this year I found an article on how Gardeners Learn to See Time Differently. That’s particularly true for those of us who live and garden in Northern climates.

This November we’ve already had 30” of snow just to see it mostly melt away by Thanksgiving. Then, on Sunday we woke up to the predicted winter storm although the freezing rain was significantly less than predicted and the snow was about one third of what we were told to expect.

But the days will be cold and windy more often than not and that’s when I dig into my stash of gardening books to make plans for next year.

Included in that is my ongoing quest to reduce the amount of lawn we have here. It’s a continual process and one that I’ve been pretty successful on at the front of the house. This summer I want to tackle the side yard, which will be a bit difficult as it’s very shady and I’m at my best growing in full sun.

That’s why I plan to spend some quality time re-reading Shrink Your Lawn by Evelyn Hadden. It’s a great, illustrated guide to changing the look of your yard whether you want a boulevard garden, an herb garden, a rain garden or you want to go completely lawn free!

This is just one of the many gardening books I’ll be reading this winter so stay tuned for more reviews.
